Maribor Destination Guide

The capitol of Styria, Maribor, is the second largest city in Slovenia, but is also pleasantly small. It has a rich wine tradition, which is not a surprise, as its location is between wine growing hills and Pohorje, giving you abundant possibilities for sports, relaxation, exploring, ect.

While visiting Maribor, you should take a walk along the river Drava, see the oldest part of Maribor- Lent, the Grajski trg square, the Town hall, bishop Slomsek's Cathedral and its viewing tower, the art gallery and theatre… you will absolutely be enchanted by the beauties of Maribor and it’s nearby sights…

You should see the fascinating landscape, as it is interesting throughout the year. Maribor is also known for its cultural events. An explosion of those occur every year during the Lent festival in early July. You should also visit the Old Wine Festival, The Maribor Festival, The Golden Fox, The Castle Masters Festival, which is also featuring the castle market place on Fridays and Saturdays as well as concerts, which take place until mid September. There are also different concerts and exhibitions in Bolfenk and many other cultural and sports events.

Pohorje

Pohorje is something special in Slovenia’s mountain world. The gently rounded ridges of Slovenia’s oldest mountain chain attracts visitors with its mighty forests, nature reserves and extensive mountain meadows that become ski slopes in the winter. Pohorje is a perfect destination for hikers, cyclists and others, seeking adrenaline. But you don't think that Pohorje is only for adrenaline seekers. It is also very tranquil. The forest and waterfalls have the ability to calm and relax any visitor.

Be sure to see Ribnisko Jezero Lake, Crno Jezero Lake and the Lovrensko Jezerje Lakes with their dwarf pine shrubbery.

Zrece

Zrece, is home to just over 6000 people. Although it is a small town, Zrece offers a lot. For instance, Zrece Spa, a place where you can enjoy in all kinds of massages (Tuina, Ayurvedic or a genuine Thai massage) or relax in different kinds of saunas, as well as in the thermal pools and whirlpools.

Zrece is known for being a perfect destination for active holidays – walking, cycling, playing golf and skiing. In the winter, a ski bus is available everyday and the hotel also offers ski tickets at reduced prices (for guests only).

Celje and the Old Catle Celje

The Old Castle Celje invites you to discover the rich historical heritage of the city of Celje and the famous myth of its founders. Bold ancestors, strong personalities, marked by an uncompromising desire for power and extraordinary abilities, which enabled them the rise among the most important noble families of their time and finally the decline of a dynasty, broken by a single event. All of this stimulated people’s imagination and represented an excellent basis for the creation of a European legend. Because of this, the Counts of Celje are known throughout central Europe.

Mozirski Gaj - The Botanical Garden

Mozirski Gaj, the botanical garden, which gives the town Mozirje its seal, is not only interesting because of the flowers and the native trees, but also because of ethnographic buildings. If visiting Mozirje in the winter time, you should, without a doubt go skiing on the wonderful ski slopes of Golte. If you like to fish, you should wet your feet in the Savinja river, which is rich with brook trout and grayling. The Savinja river is a also appealing for kayaking, as well as swimming.

King Matjaz Park

There is a place where time not only stops, but runs backwards. Come experience peace and tranquility at its finest at the King Matjaz Park.

Murska Sobota

Murska Sobota is the regional centre of Pomurje, the northeast part of Slovenia and is the only Slovenian town situated on an actual plain. Murska Sobota has limited accommodations for tourists, but it is certainly worth seeing.
